Perth Music (from last millenia)

covers of some vinyl singles from Perth bands

Sadly my collection of vinyl singles are locked away in my house in Perth (I'm living in Brisbane now) and many of the classics and treasures are inaccessible. So all I have to post are tracks from the CDs and few vinyl albums I have with me or have acquired recently.

This mix is of Perth bands from the 1970's through to the end of the millenia, when I had already left Perth and moved to Sydney. This mix moves from punk to pub rock, surf instros to post-punk, guitar pop and more. This is only the surface of some of the great music that has come from, and continues to be created in, Perth - the world's most isolated city.

Most of these bands I saw live, many I saw numerous times, some I just liked, others I played in, or played gigs with. But it will give you an idea of how vibrant the Perth music scene was. Check out the links if you want to find out more about any of these bands.

Wonderful, thank you so much for this. I'm largely in denial of "my" Australian culture, but I am one to embrace any Perth bands from the 80s.

Can't wait to hear the mix!

Wow, thanks for that, I stumbled on it unexpectedly. Certainly brought back some memories of seeing some great shows. Stuff I had forgotten about like, Chad's Tree, how many times I saw The Jackals, working in a bank and being asked to cash a cheque made out to The Walton's.... I'll add my own favourites to your mix list, A Month of Sundays, Favourite Game (Saidaside), Ammonia & Header (shoulda been huge!).

Looking back from the distance of Zurich, I realise how lucky those of in the know were. Still great music I hear drifting out of Perth now, Sleepy Jackson, Bob Evans, Esky Joe (who I remember better for the "Sweater" song). Current faves are The Kill Devil Hills and The Drones (claimed for Perth). I was lucky enough to catch my personal hero Dom Mariani play in Italy earlier this year, a surreal experience :-)

Enjoy your warm Christmas!

hey El and Greg

thanks for the comments, i hope you both enjoyed this compilation.

there has been so much great music coming out of Perth since the seventies. Check out the posts earlier this year for some of my favourites.

I liked your list too Greg, we must have been at some of the same gigs. My current favourites would be The M-16s and The Drones, who are both great live bands.

cheers

Michael

I recently got to hear the M-16's and the Drones on a compilation CD that Johnny Casino put together for Carbon 14 magazine called "Monsters of Australian Rock". It's a great comp!

I got a copy of Domino Records' reissue of the Triffids album "Born Sandy Devotional", and then the guy at my favorite record store turned me on to the Black Eyed Susans. Perth has produced some impressive bands!

hey Jon

that Carbon 14 compilation sounds interesting, i'll have to try to hunt down a copy of the magazine

i'm waiting for them to release The Triffids' Treeless Plain album, 'cos there should be some interesting extra tracks with that

the early Black Eyed Susans also included Dave McComb and Martyn Casey of the Triffids

i'm glad you liked the Perth music mix. Your "Records I Bought and Liked This Year" included a bit of Aussie music - good to see!

cheers

Michael
